Description:
This is the third collaboration between Voltaire and Rameau, known for "Candide" and other works. Composed for Louis XV to commemorate his victory over Fontenoy in the War of the Austrian Succession, it was performed twice at the Grand Stables of the Palace of Versailles, then revised for a second performance at the Citizens' Theatre, with the script deleted to suit the mood of the time, and that version has survived to the present. This time, Julien Dubruque, a leading scholar of Rameau, has restored the version of the premiere based on manuscripts, printed scores, and scripts of the time that had been kept in the library of the University of California, Berkeley, and for the first time since 1745, the entire work has been performed in its original powerful version. Maguigan said, "It's gorgeous and spectacular beyond description. The orchestra, packed with a variety of instruments from trumpets to bagpipes, plays incredibly elaborate music," he praised this edition. A 68-page all-color booklet, filled with detailed background text in English, English translations of the lyrics, and beautiful stage photographs, is also included, transporting the listener to an ancient royal palace. This is the 10th anniversary edition of the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra's own label.Incidentally, this work includes the original "Rameau's Gavotte in D major," which was published in the Suzuki Method and is well known to boys and girls learning violin.
