Description:

In early 19th century Europe, there was a growing interest in ethnic matters. Particular attention was paid to the cultures around England, including England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, where the English sheet music merchant and amateur musician George Thomson was active. He collected folk songs from around the country and asked the most famous composers of the time to arrange them into songs with accompaniment, which Handel, Haydn, and Beethoven did. Haydn reportedly enjoyed this work very much, but Beethoven was somewhat dissatisfied, as he could not agree to Thomson's request to rewrite the songs with simpler accompaniment, to which Thomson replied, "I am not accustomed to revising my own works. Despite this, the series of arrangements that remain today are very enjoyable and worth listening to. This is a collection that offers a glimpse into the true face of Beethoven. Naxos Japan
