European trends originated in France—and it was shortly before the death of Lully, the royal music director, that Louis XIV, the driving force behind these trends, had the magnificent Palace of Versailles built and began living there himself. Around that time, the brilliant composer de Lalande, who had recently won the king’s favor, demonstrated his exceptional skill as the head of the Royal Chapel Orchestra—which had undergone organizational restructuring—and released a series of innovative grand motets (large-scale church music) characterized by rich orchestral writing. From these masterpieces—which stand out for their use of instruments that went even further than Lully’s style—we present two early masterpieces and the landmark “Te Deum,” a masterpiece that underwent revisions until the composer’s final years. —a magnificent musical world that graced the French royal court at the turn of the century and would eventually pave the way for Rameau—are presented through a vivid interpretation by Vincent Dumestru, a scholar with profound insight into French Baroque music. Several years ago, Dumestore & Le Poème Harmonique already made a strong impression with their “Te Deum” by Lully and Charpentier (Alpha952), demonstrating their exceptional aptitude by seamlessly integrating meticulous attention to detail—such as unique tempo choices and thorough instrumental recreation—into every aspect of their performance.
