After the acclaimed release of Cavalli's operatic highlights (RIC 359), the "Capella Mediterranea," led by Leonardo Garcia Alarcon, returns to the Ricercar label with a collection of Monteverdi's vocal works. The selection is well-balanced, focusing on soprano works, from the famous "Arianna's Lament," "Poppea's Crowning," and "Nympha's Lament" to lesser-known works. The most noteworthy feature of the program is the high sense of soprano Mariana Flores, who sings with great expressive power. The solo works are the main focus, but two- and three-voice works are also inserted effectively, and the dramatic effect of the polyphonic pieces that suddenly appear against the beautiful soprano solos is outstanding.
