The Lord's Prayer is one of the most famous prayers in Christianity, beginning with the words "Our Father who art in heaven.... This album features Georg Böhm's chorale preludes based on the Lord's Prayer, religious instrumental works of the German Baroque, and Lutheran cantatas for solo alto (countertenor) voice. These works are strongly influenced by Italian music of the time, when instrumental music was at its height, and instrumental music plays a major role in the accompaniment of vocal music. All of the purely instrumental works are based on religious themes, many of which are based on chorale melodies of the time. Performed by violinist Stephanie de Faye and the ensemble Crematis, which has released an exciting album (RIC326) of works by the Vitali father and son, including the "Chaconne". Here, too, they sing the intonation and melodic beauty of each work with great care for religious piety, making for a very rewarding listening experience. Naxos Japan
