It is still fresh in our memories how, the moment Mao Fujita took the stage for the first preliminary round and began playing Bach, the atmosphere instantly shifted; as she progressed through Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Chopin, she captivated not only the audience in the hall but also viewers watching the live broadcast around the world. Although he was still relatively unknown on the international stage, his second-place finish reportedly sent both Japan and here in Russia into a frenzy. At the gala concert, he even tackled the finale of Tchaikovsky’s Piano Concerto No. 1 without a rehearsal, demonstrating the immense trust placed in him by the maestro Gergiev. Now, an all-Chopin album recorded by Mao Fujita four months before the competition has been released. His greatest appeal lies not only in his outstanding technique but also in the beauty of his well-defined tone and his vibrant musicality.
