(Patrick Gallois) When one hears the term “Collection of Graduation Exam Pieces from the Paris Conservatory,” a rather stuffy atmosphere inevitably comes to mind; however, at the Paris Conservatory, all “exams” are actually “competitions”—opportunities for young musicians, having moved beyond their teachers’ guidance, to spread their wings of creativity as they see fit. In fact, these pieces constitute a “collection of short works for various competitions” and are not used exclusively for exams. They are essential pieces for all flutists and have become part of the standard performance repertoire. Of course, not all of these pieces are widely known, but each is a masterpiece crafted with great care by composers from modern France and its surrounding regions. While adhering to a set form—comprising a leisurely introduction, a brilliant and technically demanding fast section, and concluding with a dazzling cadenza—this collection is highly artistic, allowing the composers’ individuality to shine through to the fullest. This time, the renowned flutist Patrick Gallois has taken on this collection. He performs these works—which offer many highlights—with remarkable ease, delivering a rich and nuanced performance. And don’t miss Kazunori Seo on piano!
