The violinist Asuka Sezaki, who captivates audiences with her lustrous tone and profound musicianship, trained in Europe and has won prizes at numerous competitions; she has already released albums of Ysaye and Saint-Saens. Here she turns to the violin sonatas of Franck and Strauss - Franck with its beautiful dialogue between violin and piano, Strauss brimming with youthful ardour. Sezaki approaches these technically demanding masterpieces with sincerity and single-mindedness, conveying their essence with great care. [From the liner notes] The two sonatas I have recorded here are works I have long held in deep affection, pieces I have kept close to me since my student years in France and Italy. If Strauss is "song", then Franck might be called "poetry"; these works trace the borderland between movement and stillness and survey a whole life, and I feel they are the closest thing to where I stand today. (Asuka Sezaki) She began the violin at the age of six. After entering the high school attached to the Tokyo University of the Arts, she appeared at fifteen in the Enren Concert series presented by the Japan Federation of Musicians, making her debut with a complete performance of Paganini's 24 Caprices in the Small Hall of the Tokyo Bunka Kaikan. She studied with the late Chikashi Tanaka, Masafumi Hori and Seiji Kageyama and graduated at the top of her class from the Tokyo University of the Arts, after which she studied abroad as an Agency for Cultural Affairs overseas study fellow, completing the third cycle (postgraduate) course at the Conservatoire de Paris in violin and chamber music. Her teachers there were Regis Pasquier, Jean-Jacques Kantorow and Christian Ivaldi. In 2011, with a scholarship from the Rohm Music Foundation, she studied in Rome with Felix Ayo. Her honours include First Prize at the Takarazuka Vega Music Competition, First Prize at the 64th Music Competition of Japan, Third Prize at the Leopold Mozart International Competition, Fourth Prize at the Wieniawski International Competition, the highest prize at the Trieste International Chamber Music Competition, and victory at the Forval Scholarship Stradivarius Competition (which brought her the loan of the 1697 Stradivarius "Rainville" for two years). She has also received the City of Ciboure Prize and the Ravel Prize from the Maurice Ravel International Music Academy, the Baroque Saal Award from the Aoyama Foundation and the Chiba City Distinguished Service Award.
