Description:
This is the third solo album by fortepiano player Shigehiko Kawaguchi, who shot to fame after winning second place at the “1st International Chopin Period Instrument Competition” held in Warsaw in 2018. This album brings together lesser-known Spanish works that he deeply loves and has dedicated himself to as his life’s work in his concerts to date. Spanning the era of Domenico Scarlatti (1685–1757)—an Italian who spent half his life active in Spain—and Antonio Soler (1729–1783), to the emergence of Isaac Albéniz (1860–1909), who left behind the masterpiece *Iberia*—a span of roughly 100 years during which the history of Spanish keyboard music appears to have seen few major developments. In reality, however, a wealth of wonderful music was created during this period that allows us to sense the daily lives and very breath of the people of that time. One of the artists who lived during precisely that era was the painter Francisco de Goya (1746–1828), and the concept behind this album is to explore what kind of music was actually being played in Spain during his lifetime—and what those sounds were like. We have also paid close attention to the instruments used. When it comes to performing Spanish music on period keyboard instruments, the Viennese-style Walter—which is geographically close—is often used; however, it is known that in the 18th century, the Spanish royal family received a piano as a gift from the British firm Broadwood, and that local instrument makers were apparently influenced by the British square piano. Based on this, British instruments were selected for this recording. These works—the result of extensive exploration into the compositions, instruments, and interpretations—are expressed with the deep empathy gained from that research. While many are short pieces lasting less than five minutes, each radiates a sparkling charm, making this a beautiful and exhilarating album. Naxos Japan
