Gen Tomuro

Description:

Born in 1989, Gen Tomuro is a pianist whose stylish playing reflects a childhood spent abroad. This album is devoted to Poulenc, the composer he loves above all others. It opens with the Three Novelettes and has at its centre the 15 Improvisations of 1932; among these, No. 15, "Hommage à Édith Piaf", written for a singer Tomuro adores, shows Poulenc's elegance at its most characteristic. Napoli, made up of three pieces written over a wide span of years, is equally beautiful - an intriguing work in which the best of Italy and of France are fused. From Gen Tomuro 2019 marks the 120th anniversary of the birth of Francis Poulenc, and I wanted to make a CD of the composer I love most among all the French music I have studied. This is my debut recording, and I have chosen the pieces that mean most to me from Poulenc's many piano works. I lived in Paris for more than ten years, studying with the pianist Philippe Entremont, who knew Poulenc personally, and through him I was able to touch the essence of the brilliant French culture of that era. I also met others who had known Poulenc, and so have lived with his music and his spirit close at hand. I hope to go on performing and recording so that as many people as possible can hear this wonderful music. Born in Tokyo, he grew up from the age of six in San Francisco, Boston and Paris. In 2007 he graduated from the Walnut Hill School for the Arts and completed his studies at the Preparatory Division of the New England Conservatory with its highest award. Discovered by Philippe Entremont at the music festival at the Château de Fontainebleau, he moved to Paris, and in 2008 made his concerto debut at the Salle Gaveau. He has since appeared with the Belgian National Orchestra, the Santo Domingo Symphony Orchestra, the Palm Beach Symphony, the Orchestra del Teatro del Giglio, the Orchestre de la Cité Internationale Universitaire de Paris and the Orchestre de Paris, among others. He was a participating artist in Chanel Pygmalion Days in 2012, and in 2013 formed a piano trio with Gérard Poulet and Hirofumi Kanno, giving numerous concerts. In 2014 he began master's studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London, and in 2018 completed the degree with distinction; in 2017 he performed in France, Italy, the United Kingdom and Japan. In Paris he studied with Philippe Entremont. Naxos Japan
