The third solo album by bassist Kento Takasugi, who performs in genres such as classical, Argentine tango, and pop. Featuring his signature orchestral tuning, this album presents a world of deep, expansive bass tones—as vast as the sea and sky—performed alongside piano and accordion. While solo double bass albums almost invariably include pieces by Bottesini or Koussevitzky, this work stands out as a richly varied collection that does not rely on such staples. Highlights include “Atoun,” a masterpiece by contemporary double bass virtuoso Rabat, and “Reitba,” which aims for new sonic effects; from the tango genre, “Libertango” arranged by Argentine bassist Martín; “Milonga del Adiós,” a tribute to Piazzolla by pianist Segrel of the Piazzolla Quintet; and “Saudade” by cellist Bragat, who also arranges and publishes Piazzolla’s sheet music. From the classical repertoire, the album features two “Vocalises” by Rachmaninoff and Ravel, Gershwin’s jazz pieces “Prelude No. 2” and “Slap That Bass,” as well as the original composition “El Deseo,” a collaboration with pianist and accordionist Megumi Tsuchiya—making for an energetic selection. The sound of the double bass intertwined with the chromatic accordion is also refreshing. This is a must-listen bass album for anyone seeking a new dimension of the double bass’s appeal.
