Description:
An unaccompanied album by Mikio Unno featuring two cellos Bach performed with gut strings and a Baroque bow, Kodály played on a renowned Czech instrument, and unaccompanied works commissioned by Unno himself. A heartfelt album that showcases the unique character of each piece. Now available in high-resolution 192 kHz/32-bit Hi-Res audio! Up-and-coming cellist Mikio Unno releases an unaccompanied album featuring two instruments. The Bach unaccompanied works are performed using gut strings and a Baroque bow on a 2024 cello modeled after a Gasparo da Salò, crafted by Yoshiki Nakamura, one of Japan’s leading instrument makers. Gaspare da Salò is known, alongside Amati, as one of the world’s oldest stringed instrument makers. As Umino himself states, “Just because I use period instruments doesn’t mean my goal is to faithfully recreate performance styles of the distant past. It’s simply that the charm of natural materials allows me to approach Bach with a very natural state of mind.” True to his words, the Bach music woven from this Gasparo-model instrument is utterly natural, yet profoundly deep, seeming to soothe the listener’s heart into a state of natural ease. The subsequent performance of Kodály is like a completely different person. If Bach soothes the soul, Kodály stirs it, evoking a wide range of emotions—melancholy, passion, and more. The differences in expression between movements are striking: the first movement is refined yet passionate; the second movement features a narrative characterized by both thoughtfulness and passion; and the third movement, with its exquisite balance of intensity and control, exudes a constant sense of vigor—making for a performance that never fails to captivate the listener. In the two Japanese works, he reveals yet another facet of his artistry. True to Umino’s reputation—he has reportedly played these works from memory since their premieres—the performance is so compelling that one might think he is composing as he plays. This is a performance born of a deep, visceral understanding of the works. For a composer, there could be no greater reward than to have a piece performed in such a way that it truly becomes “the performer’s own words.” The recording is also superb, capturing the very essence of the instruments and creating a sense of depth and immediacy that makes it feel as though the performance is taking place right before your eyes.
