Description:
Kate Bollinger, the highly sought-after Virginia-born, LA-based multidisciplinary artist, has finally signed with Ghostly International to release her long-awaited debut full-length album! In her full-length debut, Songs From A Thousand Frames Of Mind, there is an entire world in the smallest of details. The Charlottesville-born, Los Angeles-based songwriter says, "When I'm recording a song, a good indication of whether or not it's worth pursuing is if I can see a movie in my head to accompany it. Combining classic pop songcraft with punk intuition, Kate Bollinger creates a collage of visions. From down-home folk songs to warm psychedelic rock that makes you feel as if Hope Sandoval were the frontman for the early Rolling Stones, this album is like flipping through a cool friend's record collection and finding a new favorite song with every discovery. It's like flipping through a cool friend's record collection and finding a new favorite song each time you discover it. To create this epic fusion of styles, Bollinger spent years cultivating the material, traveling across the United States from his native Virginia to California, and working with new collaborators. Evolving from the hermetic approach of her early EPs and solo performances, she arrived at a fuller sound based on intuitive response and the energy of the moment. She says, "I've come to believe that most of the music I like is the result of a room full of friends and longtime players playing live in that room." Armed with a myriad of hooks and intensely shifting textures, Bollinger comes across as both an art-house filmmaker and songwriter, creating soundtracks and backdrops for movies that don't exist. (Bollinger studied film in college and also directed the impressive music video for Jessica Pratt's latest single, "World on a String.") Highlights of the album include the jangle-pop classic "Any Day Now" and the theatrical "I See It Now," both co-written with Spacebomb Records mastermind Matthew E. White. After spending several months writing in Richmond and Los Angeles, Kate traveled to upstate New York to record with producer Sam Evian (Big Thief, Blonde Redhead, Cass McCombs), with whom she had developed a similarly close relationship. Together with longtime friend and drummer Jacob Grissom, her inspirations range from '60s icons like Francoise Hardy and Velvet Underground to '90s touchpoints like No Doubt and Pavement. We formed a cohesive, collaborative group that matches." In a way, this album feels like my musical debut.I feel like I have finally expressed all aspects of myself in one album." (1/2)
