Following on the heels of Arushi Jain's long-running masterpiece Under the Lilac Sky (2021), this new album, DELIGHT, has at its core the simple proposition that joy is accessible and cultivating it is a worthwhile endeavor. aim is to "instill the belief that joy is always present. ...... when it is hard to find, and to insist on the need to actively seek it out". To enhance the perception of this elusive emotion, it is necessary to observe the present at length.Layering cello, classical guitar, marimba, flute, saxophone, and rich Indian classical vocals with modular synthesis, her sound vocabulary expands into a richly textured landscape, marking a new realm of creative focus. Jain is a multi-hyphenate artist/musician: composer, vocalist, engineer, and modular synthesizer player. As widely known, she deploys the sounds and aesthetics of contemporary experimental electronic music to channel, celebrate, iterate, and interrogate traditional Indian idioms. Her first album, Under the Lilac Sky (also released on Leaving), was an offering of sorts, a suite of six songs that accompany the listener as they watch the sunset. But whereas its predecessor was about time, space, and our external environment, "Delight" is more introspective and at times closer to autobiographical. At the same time, it is a record of the artist's inner journey and an invitation/roadmap for listeners to embark on their own exploration of pleasure. (1/2)
