Last year, *Sign o’ the Times*—originally released as a 2-CD set—was reissued as a Super Deluxe Edition featuring all 92 tracks across 8 CDs, and it was an unprecedented hit. The performances from the European tour accompanying this album—often called a timeless classic—were originally filmed for a theatrical release, but Prince, a perfectionist, was not satisfied. He re-filmed most of the live footage at his own Paisley Park Studios on the outskirts of Minneapolis, resulting in *Sign o’ the Times*. As his third starring role following *Purple Rain* (1984) and *Under the Cherry Moon* (1986)—and a film he directed himself—this work is a Prince-filled experience from start to finish. With his sexy vocals, groovy guitar, light-footed steps and dance moves, whimsical fashion that changes with every song, and skits interspersed throughout, the entire 84 minutes—a mesmerizing spectacle that transcends narcissism—keep you glued to the screen from start to finish. The live performance centers on songs from *Sign O’ the Times*. From “Sign O’ the Times”—which carries a social message—to the house-shaking dance number “Housequake,” the soulful “Slow Love,” to the pop-oriented “Place of Your Man”—each track showcases a distinct character, keeping the audience captivated throughout. While interspersing tracks from other albums—such as “Little Red Corvette” and Charlie Parker’s “Now’s the Time”—the show remains true to the album’s overall atmosphere. The musicians backing Prince are a star-studded lineup. Since this tour marks a new chapter following the disbandment of his own band, The Revolution, the members are particularly fired up. Sheila E. delivers a hip-shaking drum and percussion performance and even showcases a dynamic drum solo. Dr. Fink, who remained from The Revolution, provides keyboard work that underpins the rock-solid Prince sound. Furthermore, dancer Cat Glover engages in a seductive interlude with Prince during a skit, adding even more intensity to the performance. In “You Got the Look,” inserted as a fantasy (?) scene, Sheena Easton—who was rumored to be in a romantic relationship with Prince at the time—makes a special guest appearance. The clash between these two big-name stars creates sparks. This film captures every moment of the 29-year-old Prince at the peak of his career.
