Description:

Sorrow, melancholy, indignation, and joy...they are all in Purcell's songs. They include some of the best English-language solo songs of 17th-century England. After Purcell's death, J. Playford, who published a two-volume collection of these solo works, "Orpheus of Britannia," wrote in the preface to the first volume (1698/1706): "The incomparable genius of this composer in all genres of music is widely known, but his vocal music in particular is much admired. His vocal music was especially admired, because he had the ability to write lyrics in English, and he had the ability to write in English. His vocal music was especially admired because he had a special gift for expressing the power of English lyrics, which moved the emotions of all his listeners to admiration. Nothing could better describe the qualities of Purcell's solo singing than these words.Toshiharu Nakajima (Kauter Tenor) graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts, completed postgraduate studies at Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music and the Graduate School of Lieder and Oratorio at the Vienna State University of Music, and completed postgraduate studies at the Amsterdam Conservatory. Lives and works in Amsterdam, and is active as a soloist in oratorios and operas in Europe and elsewhere. She is a recipient of the 2009 Rohm Music Foundation Scholarship and a recipient of the Agency for Cultural Affairs Overseas Study Program for Emerging Artists. She has received the Kyoto City Special Encouragement Prize for Arts and Culture, the Shiga Prefecture Next Generation Culture Award, and the Gotoh Memorial Culture Award for Newcomers to Opera.
