Brahms by the Great Conductor Kantelli (Kantelli), Who Died Too Young This album features a captivating collection of Brahms works—including Symphony No. 1, the Alto Rhapsody, and the Tragic Overture—which he performed in his final concert! There are surprisingly many great musicians who passed away at a young age despite having promising futures. Among them are Nouvet, Levin, Lipatti, Du Pré, Sippers, Kertész, and others. Cantelli, whom we’re featuring here, is certainly one of the most representative examples. This young Italian conductor, who even earned the respect of the great Toscanini, expanded his activities not only throughout Italy but also across Europe and to the United States, and was poised for a brilliant career. He traveled to the United States at Toscanini’s invitation to guest-conduct the NBC Symphony Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic, among others; as a result, we are fortunate that some of his performances have been preserved in the form of broadcast recordings, in addition to his official recordings for HMV. Among the works included in this collection, Brahms’ Symphony No. 1 holds a special significance for him: he left behind an official recording of it, and it was also the piece he conducted at his final concert. Just as Toscanini himself remarked, “It resembles my own performing style from my younger days,” this performance is indeed reminiscent of Toscanini: energetic, with a sharp sense of tempo, and meticulous attention to every detail—the similarities are striking. Given the era, this is to be expected; however, please note that since these are broadcast recordings, the sound quality varies, and there are differences depending on the date of performance, venue, and the condition of the master tapes. Although the recordings are in monaural, the sound quality itself is more than adequate for listening pleasure. This album is a rich collection that distills Cantelli’s charm into a single disc, and I would like to recommend it not only to historical music enthusiasts but also to the general public.
