While three different versions of Furtwängler’s “Pastoral” have been released—including those from Delta, from the wartime period, and from his return to the RAI in Rome—this particular “Pastoral” is the last recording Furtwängler ever made. Recorded live on May 23—half a year before his death—at the Titania-Palast in Berlin, it was performed alongside Beethoven’s “Fate” Symphony (previously released as DCCA-0055). The program exactly matches that of his postwar comeback concert, which also took place at the Titania-Palast. This performance of the “Pastoral” features the free-flowing tempos reminiscent of the postwar comeback concert, a fluid yet dramatically varied flow, and masterful expression. Combined with the calm, sculptural beauty characteristic of Furtwängler’s later, more restrained style—and enhanced by a sense of even greater scale—it has been crafted into a truly memorable performance. Furtwängler made four different recordings of *Leonore No. 2*. The performance included here is the earliest of the surviving recordings, dating from 1947. However, after resuming his conducting career following the war, Furtwängler was already taking the podium not only with the Berlin Philharmonic but also in Hamburg—less than two months after his return—conducting works such as Richard Strauss’s *Death and Transfiguration* in addition to *Leonore No. 2*. The highlight of *Leonore No. 2* is, without a doubt, the dramatic pause at the very end of the introduction. A silence—almost as if to say, “Is this it?!”—swallows the hall in an instant. Many audience members who were actually present at the concert hall must surely have held their breath at that very moment. *Please note that, as this recording was mastered from an old tape, it contains noise, fluctuations, and skips.
