The second installment of the Klemperer Series features Mahler’s Symphony No. 4! The driving force Klemperer brings to this performance is a must-hear! The first installment—Bruckner’s Symphony No. 7 with the Berlin Philharmonic—was also well-received, but this time we’re featuring Mahler’s symphonies, which are inextricably linked to Klemperer’s legacy. As you know, Klemperer began his career as conductor of the German Opera in Prague at the young age of 22, thanks in part to Mahler’s recommendation. He is often compared to Walter in his capacity as a student of Mahler, and it’s true that, compared to Walter—who performed Mahler’s works frequently—reviews of Klemperer’s Mahler performances seem to rate him lower than the quality of his actual performances might warrant. However, judging from the recordings that have survived, his performances display a sense of stability and are firmly grounded—truly the mark of a master’s artistry. As for Symphony No. 4, in addition to this recording from Cologne, he also left behind recordings with the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Berlin RIAS Symphony Orchestra, the Vienna Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Orchestra, so it would be interesting to compare them side by side. While the tempo is slightly faster than in other performances, it is by no means sloppy; on the contrary, one can feel a powerful sense of momentum. Just from the sound alone, you would never guess that the conductor is nearly 70 years old. That’s how intense Klemperer’s concentration is in this performance; in the third movement, there’s even a passage where you can hear a groan that sounds distinctly like Klemperer’s. Soprano Tretschler’s voice is bright, and her singing, which perfectly matches the atmosphere, is another highlight. Since this was mastered from an old tape, there is some noise, fluctuation, and skipping. Please be aware of this in advance. [Comment provided by Delta Entertainment] ---
