A Great Year for the “Eroica”! Featuring Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 and the “Eroica” from the November 30, 1952, program! We have already released three reissues of “Eroica”: the Urania recording (DCCA-0031), the Rome recording (DCCA-0039), and DCCA-0051, featuring the Berlin Philharmonic on December 7, 1952—the same date as this performance. While “Urania’s Eroica” is overwhelmingly popular, the “Eroica” with the Berlin Philharmonic from December 1952 has also garnered more support than expected, reminding me of the incredible depth of curiosity among Furtwängler fans. Consequently, we received requests from fans who wanted to compare this recording with the one featuring the Vienna Philharmonic, asking us to release it if possible. Fortunately, we had a master of sufficient quality to withstand reissuance, and we were able to produce a natural-sounding recording that is sure to be well-received, without adding any unnecessary coloration. While some may say that all of Furtwängler’s “Eroica” recordings sound the same, it seems to me that no two performances are exactly alike—whether due to the recording period, the orchestra, or whether it was a live or studio performance. You’ll likely be able to discern the differences even between the Vienna Philharmonic and the Berlin Philharmonic—orchestras often referred to as “Furtwängler’s own.” Furthermore, the Symphony No. 1 included as a coupling, despite its small ensemble, possesses depth and a remarkable sense of speed with exceptional clarity. It avoids becoming a heavy, slow, or bizarre-sounding performance; I can only describe it as a magnificent performance that holds something within it that makes you go, “Hmm!” The sound quality might even be better than that of the “Eroica.” [Comment provided by Delta Entertainment] ---
