Furtwängler’s Tchaikovsky: Features Symphony No. 4, the Waltz, and the Finale from the Serenade for Strings! Furtwängler left behind very few recordings of Tchaikovsky: just one version each of Symphonies Nos. 4 and 5 (DCCA-0047), two versions of Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” and one version of the Waltz and Finale from the Serenade for Strings—which is used as the coupling on this release—making the total number extremely limited, which is a shame. The Symphony No. 4 included here was a studio recording undertaken by EMI (recorded at the Musikverein), and the fact that the recording spanned multiple days attests to their commitment to perfection. Consequently, the performance is free of any excess, and Furtwängler’s artistic vision is strongly reflected in the playing itself. With freely varying tempos, the result is a performance of immense scale that, despite being a studio session, feels remarkably close to a live performance. Furthermore, the Vienna Philharmonic’s skill at the time was remarkable, and the performance clearly conveys just how well they complemented Furtwängler. While Symphony No. 4 is superb, the String Serenade is also a magnificent performance. Bringing out Tchaikovsky’s distinctive rhythms and melodies within the very limited instrumentation of strings alone is extremely difficult for the musicians. While the conductor’s score-reading is certainly crucial, a truly great performance cannot be achieved unless every single musician shares the same vision. Even with these limitations, the beauty of the Vienna Philharmonic’s strings is precisely the kind of tone that creates a truly masterful performance.
