The album is a concept album that combines a wide range of musical styles including country, blues, rock, jazz, gospel, and bluegrass into a single album. Produced by John Simon, who also produced The Band's "Music from Big Pink," and featuring a stellar group of songwriters including John Hartford, John Sebastian, Richard Manuel, Leonard Cohen, Cyrus Farrar, and Graham Nash, whose friendship with her is evident in the wide range of their work. This album is a masterpiece of good-time music, and at the same time, it is a comprehensive and profound statement of American music of the time.
