This is the third album released by the Magic Band led by Captain Beefheart, the genius of American Rock as well as Frank Zappa, following "Safe As Milk" and "Strictly Personal". It was produced by Frank Zappa and released on Zappa's Strait label in 1969. The sound of the album, which is said to have been recorded after several months of rehearsals involving the band's collective life, was of incomparable intensity, and it became a blockbuster album with crazy grooves and unpredictable song development exploding over two LPs. The fusion of blues and free jazz, the roots of post-punk, and other elements of this album have gained increasing recognition over time, and it questions the boundaries of popular music, and even the definition of music.
