Description:
<The Rhythm Rockers are a rough dance band that mixes R&B with the local Southern California surf sound, the 35th in the "60's Garage Disc Guide" reissue series supervised by Jimmy Masuko and presented by All Days Records! The Rhythm Rockers have never had a national or even local hit, and none of the musicians in the band became famous later in their career, although some of the members worked behind the scenes. There were no outstanding guitarists or songwriters. The performances are full of flaws. Yet, for some reason, I find myself attached to this album by the Rhythm Rockers. It is as if I am listening to a teenage band at the Rendezvous Ballroom in California in 1963. This album is not a live recording, but it is as close to a studio show as you can get. The reverb-laden guitars are unmistakably surf, and the song choices are surf, but here, too, the "cool" teens who were into jazz, blues, and R&B were playing like crazy. While the Beach Boys, Jan and Dean, and even Dick Dale were using young professional musicians to create bright, fun Southern California pop music, in the local California ballrooms, rough-and-tumble dance bands were doing their best to get the neighborhood teen surfers to dance. In the local ballrooms of California, rough-and-tumble dance bands were doing their best to get the neighborhood teen surfers to dance. ~From the commentary by Jimmy Masuko
