The northwestern region of Mississippi in the United States, known as the "Mississippi Delta," is the birthplace of the blues. Delta blues, which was born in this region, is characterized by rhythmic strokes on the acoustic guitar and slide guitar playing, and later became the origin of Chicago blues, which emerged in the 1950s, and of blues rock, which emerged in the 1960s. This album is a compilation of recordings from the first golden age of Delta Blues in the 20s and 30s. The 13 tracks on this album include numbers by Charlie Patton, the "Father of Delta Blues," Sun House, who is often called the best bluesman in the Delta, and Skip James, whose distinctive high tone vocals and sensitive guitar playing made him a popular figure.
