Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Dennis Brain’s Passing! Savor Dennis’s Horn Playing = Compared to the 1944 recording, both Piers and Brain bring greater depth to Britten’s Serenade. Goossens’s accompaniment is also solid. Barclay’s pieces are also well worth listening to, but it is said that subsequent horn players have not taken them up because Brain’s recording exists. As for the Brandenburg Concertos, since the first recording with Boyd Neale was considered not very good (according to Potter), a re-recording was chosen. (Ryo Aihara) = = From Toshiyuki Kobayashi’s liner notes = It was great news. Thanks to a reissue by Opus Zou—which has long shown a fervent devotion to Brain’s artistry—the long-awaited re-recording of the *Serenade* was finally set to be released. A test-mastering CD-R featuring the long-awaited *Alexander* version of Brain’s work… Suppressing my fluttering heart as I listened, from the “Prologue” on to one track after another… Brain was, as expected, magnificent. (Excerpt omitted) I urge you to listen to the “Prologue”—played using only natural harmonics—repeatedly. In the “Pastoral” from the second movement, based on a poem by Cotton, when Piers’ tenor begins singing “The day is drawing to a close…,” Brain’s horn takes over, playing with phrasing that perfectly mirrors the expression of the vocals. And in the “Nocturne” from the third movement, based on a poem by Tennyson, when the tenor sings, “Resound, horn, answer, echo, as the crimson valley replies…”—the power of the horn’s resonant, warm-hearted response to the tenor’s voice is simply irresistible.
