Broadside magazine was an underground folk song magazine published by Cis Cunningham and her husband Gordon Friesen in 1962, at the height of the folk revival/protest song boom. The magazine was published by Sis Cunningham and her husband Gordon Friesen. The magazine was famous for its influence on the folk revival boom, which was often controversial. The pages of the magazine were filled with lively references and debates about folk and protest. Because of its radical nature, the mimeograph presses used at the time were discarded by the U.S. Labor Party, resulting in a unique layout with a mixture of handwritten scores, typewritten text, handwritten illustrations, and photocopied newspaper articles. Many important figures in the folk scene at the time were involved with the magazine, which also operated a record label. The magazine is also known for nurturing important young singers such as Eric Andersen and introducing them to the world. This box set is a compilation of the Broadside recordings. (C)RS
