Analog Africa" is a popular German label that presents rare recordings from the 70s, when African music was at its most brilliant, with a gorgeous booklet. The label, which specializes in African music but also regularly introduces music from outside Africa (but mainly influenced by Africa), has produced its first compilation in 2019. This time, the label introduces us to some of the most intense dance beats that live and breathe in Belém, in the state of Pará, in northeastern Brazil. Belém is the largest city in the state of Pará, located at the mouth of the Amazon River, the largest river in the world. It has a unique culture that is a blend of African, European, and indigenous cultures, as well as the homelands of slaves, and this is evident in the dance music that is popular there. The indigenous religions of Umbanda and Candomblé, which were introduced to Pará from the Benin region of West Africa, formerly known as Dahomey, are deeply related to the traditional music of the region and are said to have given rise to dance music such as Lundun, Banggu, and Kalimbo.In addition, Latin music such as cumbia and merengue, which came over the airwaves from radio stations in Colombia and other Caribbean countries, and the culture of sound systems favored by the local people contributed greatly to the uniqueness of the local musical culture. This album is a compilation of recordings mainly from the 1970s, when the dance music of Pará was at its peak of prosperity. It features a variety of well-known and unknown artists, including Pinduka, the "King of Kalimbo," Os Muirakitans, the house band of a famous nightclub, and Mestre Kupijo, the man who evolved Paller's dance music and whose solo work was previously released on Analog Africa. The program introduces a variety of artists, both well-known and unknown. The album also features the latest in bass-heavy mastering for a more emotive, groove-driven dance sound. As usual, the 44-page booklet contains detailed descriptions of each artist, including interviews with the artists themselves. The booklet also includes rare photos and details about the excitement of the Belairn dance scene at the time.I recommend this work not only to fans of Brazilian music, but also to all music fans interested in rare grooves with an Afro flavor.
