Japan’s Electronic Music Heritage: “In Search of the Origin of Sound” – Vinyl Volume 2 [Track List & Notes] Side A.1: Yoriaki Matsudaira / Assemblage (1968) Early experimental work utilizing the “Photoformer” (an arbitrary waveform generator), an innovative device that converts hand-drawn shapes into sound. An experimental document that transforms even noise into music. Side A.2: Toshiro Mayuzumi / "Mandala" for Electronic Sounds and Voice (1969) A dense soundscape created by layering hundreds of oscillators, interwoven with Buddhist chants and laughter processed through a ring modulator. A monumental work capturing the "serendipity of sound" that cannot be replicated. Side B.1: Toshi Ichiyanagi / Tokyo 1969 (1969) Resonating with the ideas of John Cage, this piece collages the clamour of society and radio broadcasts. A pioneering work of ambient music that also incorporates early voice synthesis using a Hitachi analog computer. Side B.2: Minoru Shibata / Display '70 (1970) Produced for the Japan Pavilion at the Osaka Expo. A striking contrast between live instruments and electronic sounds, constructed through the mind-boggling “craftsmanship” of extensive tape editing. Side C.1: Joji Yuasa / Voices Coming (1969–1971) A trilogy exploring the boundaries of the human voice and meaning, using “telephone operators,” “interviews with friends,” and “politicians’ speeches” as source material. It delves into the origins of music and life. Side C.2: Akira Miyoshi / Transit (1970) A work performed at the Japan Pavilion during the World Expo. Live percussion is modulated using a ring modulator. A crystallization of relentless dedication, meticulously assembled offline from a vast selection of carefully curated tape material. Side D.1: Makoto Shinohara / Broadcasting (1974) A collage of a 20-hour NHK broadcast. A piece featuring a legendary episode in the history of electronic music, in which engineers tackled synchronization work that was nearly impossible with the analog technology of the time. Side D.2: Frank Becker / Intrusion (1972) Jet engines, Buddhist chants, wind chimes… The pinnacle of tape music, transforming sounds abundant in everyday Japanese life through filters and speed-modulation techniques to reconstruct them into an otherworldly space.
