Walter’s Mozart Program at the Limit Although Walter had emigrated from Germany to Austria due to Nazi persecution, the 1938 annexation of Austria by Germany finally forced him to flee Europe. His new home was America. His first performance with the NBC Symphony Orchestra—Toscanini’s orchestra—took place in March 1939. Like Walter, Felix Galimir, a former member of the Vienna Philharmonic who had been driven from Europe because of his Jewish heritage, was awaiting Walter’s debut as concertmaster of the NBC Symphony. Regarding the fourth movement of the “Divertimento,” Mr. Katsuyoshi Uno praised it, saying, “It possesses a nuance of light and shadow just like the Vienna Philharmonic, and that unhealthy quality—as if on the verge of breaking down in tears—is rare even for Walter.” Furthermore, the highlight of this CD is Piano Concerto No. 20. By using Reinecke’s cadenza instead of Beethoven’s, he presents Mozart as a fully Romantic composer. Here, Walter makes no attempt to hide his poignant sentimentality or restlessness. Symphony No. 40 could be called Walter’s signature piece; he successfully infuses every corner of the work with drama by making full use of a powerful orchestra. Programs for the NBC Symphony Orchestra’s regular concerts are often shorter than typical concerts since they are designed for broadcast, but this concert is a full-length performance. This source is the so-called “complete package” of the NBC radio broadcast, featuring all announcements and edited transitions between movements. It includes liner notes in both English and Japanese.
