Description:

・Akira Ifukube: Japanese Rhapsody Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra Hiroshi Wakasugi (conductor) ・Reiko Arima: Symphony No. 1 “Okinawa” Tokyo New City Orchestra Akira Naito (Conductor) [Commentary by Shuhei Hosokawa] A unique pairing of two composers who share a teacher-student relationship. The “mentor,” Itobu, hails from Hokkaido and entered this field through his research on Ainu music; the “disciple,” Arima, though born in Tokyo, was captivated by the mystique of Okinawan musical scales and has made the study of Okinawan music her life’s work. Both works dynamically unfold elements of Japan’s unique performing arts culture—folk songs and festival traditions. “Japanese Rhapsody” is a work from Ifukube’s youth (at age 21)—the composer famous for the music of “Godzilla”—and is the piece that won first prize at the 1935 Cherepnin Competition, announcing to the world, “Here is the prodigy, Akira Ifukube!” The audio for this album was recorded in 1967 under Ifukube’s supervision but had been shelved ever since. However, this performance was the one Ifukube favored most among the many recordings he made of this piece. Thanks to Reiko Arima, who served as the director at the time, this performance has now been brought back to life! “Okinawa” is the first movement of Arima’s Symphony No. 1 and and consists of three movements—"Miyako," "Yaeyama," and "Shuri." It weaves together the melodies and rhythms of traditional songs and dances from these three regions (such as the “Kuichā” of Miyako, the “Angama” of Yaeyama, and the “Kachāshi” of Shuri and the main island), creating a composition that is familiar and accessible to local audiences. Completed in 2004, it was premiered on October 25 of that year at the “Reiko Arima 50th Anniversary of Compositional Activity Concert.” Here, 70 years after the “Japanese Rhapsody,” we can clearly see the legacy passed down from teacher to student… (Japan Westminster)
