Description:
A collection of works by the legendary composer Haruo Inui, who died young. Kimiko Higuchi’s 7th CD Haruo Inui (the younger brother of Kimiko and Ryuichi Higuchi’s mother) was born on March 15, 1929, in Hongo, Tokyo, as the second son of Masahiko Inui. His father, Masahiko, was a Doctor of Law who had studied at the University of Bonn. In 1934, he entered Seishi Elementary School in Hongo Ward, and in 1941, he enrolled in Keika Junior High School, where Toru Takemitsu was two years his junior. While on leave from school due to a recurrence of hilar lymphadenitis, he began learning piano under the guidance of his older sister Utako (the mother of Ryuichi and Kimiko), and it is said he was soon able to play works by Schumann and Chopin. Relying on music books owned by his older brother Takashi, he began teaching himself composition. In January 1948, he studied counterpoint under his friend’s father, Akiyoshi Misaku, and through Misaku’s introduction, he began studying under Yujiro Ikeuchi. In April, he enrolled in the composition department at the Tokyo School of Music. His classmates included Naohiko Kai, Yuzo Toyama, Yoshio Mamiya, and Makoto Moroi. Once *Novelette* was completed on July 11, piano pieces—beginning with *Prelude in F-sharp Minor*—were produced one after another over the next year and a half. The early draft of his representative work *Persona*, consisting of four movements excluding the Gavotte, had already been completed on December 19, 1948. 1949 was Haruo Inui’s final year. In the first half of that year, following *Rhapsody*, he added the third movement, the Gavotte, to *Persona*, completing the suite of five movements, and subsequently composed *Intermezzo in B-flat Major* (March 7) and *Intermezzo in G Major* (June 15). He took his own life on Christmas Eve at the age of 20. Kazuko Yasukawa loved to perform *Persona* and premiered it in 1950. Universal Music/IMS
