The long-awaited first album from Eriko Ara, principal oboe of the Tokyo Symphony Orchestra. It contains seven works, including a piece commissioned by the player herself, "Fledermaus Hensokyoku". It opens with Debussy's famous "Clair de lune", which seems to set the mood for the whole disc. There is not a great deal of original repertoire for the oboe, but tracks two to four are original works. The second, Kalliwoda's "Morceau de salon", is a favourite that oboists often take up. Kalliwoda was a Bohemian composer who played the violin in the Prague opera orchestra from the age of twenty-two before serving for forty-three years as court Kapellmeister at Donaueschingen, leaving several hundred works. The third track is Schumann's much-loved "Three Romances", said to have been a Christmas present for his wife Clara; it is often played on viola, clarinet or cello, but was originally written for the oboe. The fourth is the Oboe Sonata that Donizetti wrote in his early twenties, an approachable work overflowing with song. Two pieces follow from the opera repertoire that Eriko Ara loves. "Song to the Moon" from Dvořák's "Rusalka" is one of the most beautiful of all arias. Then comes the highlight of the disc, "Fledermaus Hensokyoku" (Variations on Die Fledermaus - the Japanese title puns on hensō, "disguise", a nod to the operetta's plot). Johann Strauss II's "Die Fledermaus" is Eriko Ara's favourite operetta, and arrangements and paraphrases of it are beyond counting; the composer himself wrote a "Fledermaus-Quadrille". "Fledermaus Hensokyoku" was commissioned by Eriko Ara from the gifted pianist and arranger Satoshi Yamahora, and it stitches together such famous moments as the Champagne Song and Adele's aria "Mein Herr Marquis" with great skill. The disc closes with "The Legend of Ashitaka", composed by Joe Hisaishi for the animated film "Princess Mononoke", released in the summer of 1997. Ashitaka is the hero's name, and "seki" in the Japanese title means a tale handed down by word of mouth. The strangely nostalgic melody is played by solo oboe, and the album ends leaving its resonance hanging in the air. (1/2) Universal Music / IMS
