Part 1 Hiroko Tateishi’s debut CD is an all-Mozart album, featuring her passionate performance of the “Queen of the Night’s Aria” from *The Magic Flute* with an orchestra, as well as her masterful renditions of piano sonatas and rondos. Hiroko Tateishi acquired a prestigious Italian Fazioli piano through a chance encounter; ever since, she has been captivated by its rich and varied tones, and she uses this Fazioli on this Mozart recording as well. Tateishi’s performances—whether singing or playing the piano—seem utterly free-spirited, yet her foundation is surprisingly solid, and the music flows seamlessly. This is likely a result of her studies in Gregorian chant—often considered the origin of Western music—as well as her six years of piano training in Paris under Pierre Sancan, which she began at the age of 24. When I hear the phrase “Queen of the Night’s Aria,” I can’t help but think of Florence Foster Jenkins (1868–1944), who gained popularity for her wildly unconventional singing style. She made her debut as a singer at age 44 and finally gave a recital at Carnegie Hall at age 76 (just one month before her death); when RCA released a live recording of it, the whole world was blown away. Even Jenkins performed with just a piano accompaniment, yet here she is performing with a full orchestra. Is this CD an act of audacity? Or a remarkable achievement? It’s sure to be a mixed bag of opinions. What do you think when you listen to it? The bonus tracks include “A Short but Beautiful Flame” (Piano Concerto No. 21—Andante), dedicated to the genius pianist Shusuke, who passed away at the age of 16, and “Mozart for Children” (unpublished work), narrated by Shuntaro Tanikawa.
