Music is like the dappled sunlight that shifts from day to day. The light I see now, the light I’ll see again— Hiroshi Miyata’s third release is a collection of beloved miniatures featuring accessible pieces. Featuring nine familiar pieces, including “The Swan,” “After the Dream,” and “Kol Nidrei,” the album expresses the faint gradations of light—just as the title “Sunlight Filtering Through the Trees” suggests—through subtle and varied changes in tone color that capture even the most delicate nuances of the heart. Of particular note are the two works by Piazzolla; in both, the piano plays a pivotal role. The album masterfully captures Piazzolla’s characteristic undulating sound—in *Café 1930* by deliberately disrupting the notes, and in *Gran Tango* by weaving in the magic of improvisational ensemble playing. The pianist collaborating on this album is the same as on the previous release, *Ikkai-shū*: Julien Gernet, a Belgian who studied at the Paris Conservatory, and the piano used is a Bösendorfer 275. In the previous album, *Ikkai-shū*, he used the “Paolo Antonio Testore (1762)” that Hideo Saito had cherished, but immediately after recording *Ikkai-shū*, through a stroke of fate, he began using the “Antonio Stradivari ‘ Chamonix” (1698). Generally speaking, Stradivarius instruments are difficult to play, and it is not uncommon for performers to be overwhelmed by them; however, over the course of nearly three years, Dai Miyata has masterfully brought this Stradivarius under his control and draws out its magnificent tone. The pieces included on this album are all works that Dai Miyata and Julian have spent a great deal of time perfecting, and the recording session—including rehearsals—spanned four consecutive days to ensure everything was executed flawlessly. As a result, we believe you will be able to experience the blissful sound—a perfect fusion of the Stradivarius, the Bösendorfer, and the hall’s acoustics—through this high-quality CD.
