Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble’s 20th Anniversary Celebrating its 20th anniversary this year (2017), the Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble’s eighth CD features a combination of Mozart’s Concerto-Symphony for Violin and Viola and Mendelssohn’s (other) Violin Concerto in D minor—two works in total. This is the ensemble’s second CD of concertos, following Vivaldi’s “The Four Seasons” (MF20106), and once again, the ensemble members serve as soloists. Aki Solier and Kazuhiro Takagi have been members since the ensemble’s founding, while Hiroshi Narita joined in 2010—a lineup that is characteristic of the Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble, which has boasted numerous soloist-caliber musicians since its inception. Mozart and Mendelssohn share many similarities. Both received a rigorous education from an early age, were influenced by their travels throughout Europe, and honed their talents from childhood through friendly competition with their respective sisters, Nannerl and Fanny. Mozart’s Concerto-Symphony for Violin and Viola, K. 364, was composed in 1779. Drawing on the extensive experience he had gained from his Violin Concertos Nos. 3 through 5—composed as early as 1775—he demonstrates a profound sense of maturity at the age of 23. As for Mendelssohn’s violin concertos, while the one in E minor is extremely famous, his (other) concerto in D minor was premiered around 1822 (when he was 13) at the Sunday concerts held weekly in the hall of the Mendelssohn residence. In 1951, Yehudi Menuhin discovered the autograph score, and the concerto was premiered on February 4, 1952, at Carnegie Hall in New York, with Menuhin as the soloist. In recent years, research on Mendelssohn has advanced, and approximately 250 of his works have been discovered. Thus, during their short lifetimes—Mozart at age 36 and Mendelssohn at age 38—both left behind a vast body of work, totaling about 750 compositions each. Above all, what these two composers have in common is a certain degree of difficulty in performing their works. Yuko Mori and the Nagaoka-Kyō Chamber Ensemble are renowned for their unparalleled performances of Mozart, which evoke the very essence of nature—such as the breeze or the flow of water—and this same quality is reflected in their renditions of Mendelssohn, resulting in fluid, lively, and exhilarating performances. The Mozart recordings were made around the same time as those featured in the previous release (Vol. 7), including Mozart’s “Rodi,” while the Mendelssohn recordings were made during their Tokyo concert at Hamarikyu Asahi Hall.
