The Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble’s seventh release features three works by Mozart. The Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble made a sensational debut in 2001 with the release of “Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble Debut” (NF60101), which was hailed as an “astonishing ensemble.” In particular, their performance of Mozart’s *Eine kleine Nachtmusik* was met with astonishment for its pure, crystalline sound and tone—unlike anything heard from any other ensemble—and its highly precise execution. Furthermore, as Japan’s first hybrid SACD, it garnered significant acclaim for its high-fidelity recording. Subsequently, their second release, *In Memory of Hideo Saito*, featured Mozart’s Divertimenti, K. 136–138. Mozart’s works—including these pieces—are frequently performed in their concerts, and he remains a central composer in the Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble’s repertoire. Since then, the Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble has experimented with various seating arrangements; on *East Meets West* (NF6015), they adopted a “bass pyramid” configuration with cellos on both wings and a double bass in the center—a “bass pyramid” arrangement. For this recording, however, they have adopted a new configuration consisting of three semicircular quartets supplemented by a group of soloists (see photo and diagram of the arrangement), resulting in a further deepening of the ensemble’s tone and resonance. This recording was produced from a performance held in February 2014 at the Nagaokakyo Memorial Cultural Hall—the birthplace and de facto home base of the Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble—as well as from a recording session held the day before.
