Yuko Mori & Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble: Volume 5 The Nagaokakyo Chamber Ensemble, known for its wide-ranging repertoire spanning from Baroque to contemporary works, presents its fifth volume. Following its previous release, “East and West,” this album features four works by two of the 20th century’s leading composers—the British composers Britten and Elgar— as well as Latin American composers Ginastera (Argentina) and H. Villa-Lobos (Brazil). Yuko Mori joined the Pillard Chamber Orchestra in 1974 and, beginning in 1975, also participated in the Royal Stables Orchestra under the direction of Margot. Under Margot’s guidance, she studied and experienced the then-cutting-edge Baroque violin technique firsthand, focusing her performance activities primarily on Baroque and chamber music. When the French National New Radio Orchestra (now the French National Radio Philharmonic) was founded in 1977, she became its first Japanese member. The Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France is Paris’s third state-run orchestra, following the Orchestre de Paris and the Orchestre National de France. It places particular emphasis on introducing contemporary music, and Yuko Mori has performed in world premieres of works by Messiaen and Xenakis, as well as French premieres of works by Toru Takemitsu and others, often in the presence of the composers themselves. Furthermore, from 1988, she served as concertmaster (by appointment) of the Lyon National Opera Orchestra for eight years. All of Yuko Mori’s experience is reflected in the performances on this album; among the four works, Hinastera’s *Concerto for Strings* stands out as a particularly challenging piece—featuring solos for violin, viola, cello, and double bass, and the Nagaoka-kyo Chamber Ensemble devoted all its resources to tackling it as a litmus test for taking a new step forward. While it is customary to perform this piece with a conductor, this CD is believed to be the first in the world to feature a conductorless performance. [Comment provided by Universal Music/IMS]
