Markéta Irglová’s second album, created after relocating to Iceland and centered on the theme of “memory” Markéta Irglová is a singer-songwriter from the Czech Republic. At age 17, she was cast as the lead actress in the 2007 film *Once*, which tells a story much like her own rise to international fame (a love story set in Dublin, in which a local man and a Czech immigrant woman who meet on the street connect through music), and unexpectedly won the Academy Award for Best Original Song at the 80th Academy Awards for her performance of “Falling Slowly.” She subsequently gained popularity in Ireland as part of the duo The Swell Season with Glen Hansard, her co-star from the film. In 2011, she released her debut solo album, *Anar*. Her organic and introspective musical style has won her many fans, and her sound—reminiscent of Joni Mitchell and Kate Bush—is particularly captivating. Combined sales of her work with The Swell Season and her solo projects have reached 1 million copies. While her previous album, *Anar*, was produced in New York, she had moved her base to Iceland by the time she began work on this album. Having been captivated by Iceland during a trip there, she moved there immediately upon hearing that “there are good studios” there, and this album was created inspired by her thoughts and the people she met there. The title *Muna* means “remember” in Icelandic, and the album explores the theme of “memory” throughout. Featuring 27 guest musicians—including Iranian vocalist Aida Shahghasemi, her own sister Zuzi, and Bob Bchnik from the Irish band The Frames—the album offers a rich diversity of sounds, while the layered vocals create a sacred atmosphere. While introspective, it is also a work filled with warmth, as if she were candidly sharing with the audience the various experiences she has had and the cities she has observed over the years.
