Description:

The third and final installment of Tiberghien’s “Variations” series Beethoven, Ligeti, Kurtág… Ligeti and Kurtág, whose rich musicality rises amidst Tiberghien’s incisive pianism And the romantic Beethoven, culminating in the Diabelli Variations The final volume of Tibergian’s journey through “Variations,” centered on Beethoven, is now available. Tibergian made his debut on the harmoniamundi label with works by Debussy. He also released Beethoven’s Variations early in his recording career (2003), and holds a special affection for the genre. Some 20 years later, he began recording Beethoven’s complete set of variations—Beethoven himself being a master of the form. He embarked on an adventure through the world of variations—a genre that truly tests a composer’s skill—with a program featuring Beethoven’s complete set of variations alongside variations by other composers, and each volume has been highly acclaimed worldwide. This final volume finally includes the “Diabelli Variations.” One is struck by the austere pianism that shines in Ligeti, and the rich musicality that emerges from his razor-sharp tone. In Kurtág’s *Játék* (*Game*), too, the diverse colors and austere pianism are beautifully crystallized. In Beethoven, his pianism, brimming with romanticism, shines in simple pieces, while in the Diabelli Variations, it possesses a breathless intensity and persuasiveness. The richness of expression in each piece is striking, and one senses that Tibergian is ascending to even greater heights as a musician. “In this third volume, I wanted to delve deeper into the very concept of ‘variation’—an idea to which Beethoven was deeply committed throughout his life. Ligeti’s *Musica Ricercata* can be viewed as a cyclical series of variations, in that the number of notes used increases gradually with each movement. Meanwhile, the multiple movements contained in Kurtág’s *Játékok (Játékok)* are given the common title “Fleurs nous sommes… (We are flowers…)”, and they resonate with one another as if they were variations based on a single theme. “Beethoven’s *Variations on a Waltz by Diabelli* is his last great piano work. In this piece, where his lifelong reflections on the technique of variation are synthesized by his seemingly boundless creativity, he presents a self-portrait that is astonishingly intimate yet at the same time overwhelming.” (Words by Tiberian, from the liner notes) HARMONIAMUNDI
