Avishai Cohen, the world-renowned jazz bassist, is releasing a straight-ahead album marking a return to “jazz” with a trio featuring young collaborators: up-and-coming pianist Itay Simchovich, with whom he performed during his February 2026 Japan tour, and New York-based drummer Eviatar Slivnik. The album also features a special guest appearance by Jeff Ballard, making for a truly stellar lineup. The title of the album, *Eternal Child*, is taken from a piece by the legendary pianist and composer Chick Corea. Chick Corea has been the most decisive and life-changing influence on Avishai’s career. This title holds deep, spiritual significance for Avishai. “For once, the album title isn’t one of my own songs,” Avishai Cohen explains. “I believe that remaining an ‘eternal child’ is the destiny of many artists. Those who can remain that way are truly fortunate.” Symbolizing these words is the photograph gracing the album cover. It depicts Avishai himself at the age of four or five. Even now, 50 years later, the “sparkle” in his eyes remains unchanged. “What I see in those eyes is a sense of ‘wonder.’ As a child, I was a dreamer and loved nature. Even now, I am captivated by nature, music, and all things magical. You can see that the joy of life, a sense of playfulness, and an endless curiosity were already present in those eyes.” On this album, through collaborations with two young musicians—pianist Itay Simchovich (in his early 20s) and drummer Eviatar Slivnik (in his early 30s)—Avishai has made a clear return to “jazz.” “It has become my most jazz-oriented album to date. It wasn’t intentional, but it’s a result of the musicians’ individual styles.” Although they belong to a new generation, their musical DNA is deeply rooted in the jazz tradition of Miles Davis, the Jazz Messengers, Bill Evans, and Ahmad Jamal.
