The first album, a collection of works by Dutilleux, already showcased Keras’s technical prowess, his deep and incisive insight into the composer’s intentions, and the exquisite ensemble playing with the orchestra led by Himeno. This time, the program features Lutosławski and Bloch. Lutosławski’s Cello Concerto is one of the greatest masterpieces of the 20th century—a demanding work that demands gut-wrenching intensity, explosive energy, and a tension-filled ensemble between soloist and orchestra. From Bloch’s introspective melodies to Lutosławski’s explosive climax—here lies the ultimate expression achieved by Keras and Himeno. Born in Warsaw in 1913, Witold Lutosławski survived the turbulent history that shook early 20th-century Poland, carrying its deep scars with him throughout his life. His father was executed by the Bolsheviks, and Lutosławski himself experienced life under Nazi occupation, the Warsaw Uprising, and the pressures of Stalinism. The *Concerto for Orchestra* (1954) can be seen as a work that foreshadowed his turn toward modernism, a shift that began in the mid-1950s and continued until his death in 1994. Amidst a whirlwind of tremendous energy—featuring raw wind instrument sounds, folk motifs, and grotesque scenes—the work ultimately celebrates victory after a bitter struggle. The *Cello Concerto* was commissioned by the Royal Philharmonic Society and premiered in London on October 14, 1970, by its dedicatee, Rostropovich. Lutosławski himself described the relationship between the cello and the orchestra as one of “conflict.” At the climax, the orchestra’s piercing sound is so intense that it sounds as if the cellist is being whipped. Keras’s cello performance is breathtaking throughout. And the orchestra, which at times violently intertwines with the cello, creates a magnificent world born of intense tension and the exceptional technical skill of each musician. Sandwiched between the Lutosławski works was Bloch’s *Sheromo* (1916). Keras’s solo, reminiscent of a minstrel singing a tale, resonates with profound depth and sacredness, while also evoking the world of world music that Keras has explored in his career. HARMONIAMUNDI
