Dvořák: Symphony No. 7, Tchaikovsky: Violin Concerto, and others Giulini’s signature Dvořák Symphony No. 7 is available in recordings with the London Philharmonic (1976) and the Concertgebouw Orchestra (1993), both of which are renowned for their outstanding performances. There is also a live recording from 1969 with the New Philharmonia, but since the orchestra’s condition in that performance is somewhat lacking, the release of this 1973 performance with the Berlin Philharmonic in excellent sound quality is welcome news. The conviction-filled, refined phrasing and the sheer power of the solid structure are, as always, characteristic of Giulini at this stage of his career. It blends perfectly with the Berlin Philharmonic’s unparalleled, rich sound, resulting in a rare, masterful performance of Dvořák’s 7th. Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto is a new addition to Giulini’s discography. It is a magnificent performance in which Chung Kyung-wha’s passionate solo is supported by a weighty accompaniment. Furthermore, since the only existing recording of Mussorgsky’s “Khovanshchina” Overture was a monaural live recording with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the release of this stereo recording is most welcome.
