At last on SACD Hybrid Rattle and Mitsuko Uchida: the complete Beethoven piano concerto cycle A complete Beethoven piano concerto cycle recorded in February 2010 with Mitsuko Uchida as soloist, now issued on SACD Hybrid. During Rattle's sixteen years as chief conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker, he and Uchida appeared together in some thirty concerts, collaborating regularly and intensively on Mozart, Ravel, Schumann, Messiaen and Beethoven. Uchida has enjoyed a close relationship with the orchestra ever since her Berlin Philharmonic debut in 1984: she was Artist in Residence for the 2008/09 season and was invited as guest soloist for the gala concert marking the fiftieth anniversary of the Philharmonie in 2013. The concerts were spread across four programmes, imaginatively built around symphonies by Sibelius together with Ligeti and Kurtag. The Berliner Philharmoniker had previously recorded complete Beethoven concerto cycles with Karajan and Alexis Weissenberg, and with Abbado and Maurizio Pollini; this set stands as evidence that Uchida was the pianist with whom Rattle collaborated most often during his tenure, and as a tribute to her. In an interview Uchida remarked: "The English have never 'owned' Beethoven. That is why they are so tolerant. It is the reason I live in London." The encounter between Uchida, resident in England, the English Rattle, and a Berliner Philharmoniker that has 'owned' Beethoven and carries that great tradition, could hardly be anything but exceptional.
