Recorded in Berlin in October 2015, Rattle & the Berlin Philharmonic’s Complete Beethoven Symphonies Cycle is finally available on SACD Hybrid! The Beethoven cycle, performed in October 2015 at the Berlin Philharmonie—the orchestra’s home venue—is now available as a 5-disc SACD hybrid set. The complete Beethoven symphony collection on CD+Blu-ray (KKC9151), released during their tour of Japan in May 2016, garnered attention for the orchestra’s rich sound, Rattle’s profound interpretation, and superb sound quality. Rattle previously recorded the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2002. That recording, which utilized the Jonathan del Mar edition published by Bärenreiter in the latter half of the 20th century and incorporated Rattle’s distinctive interpretation, created a new vision of Beethoven that was the talk of the town at the time. This performance also uses the same edition, but it reflects Rattle’s incisive, penetrating style, his meticulous conducting that values every single note, and the Berlin Philharmonic’s weighty expression, resulting in a performance brimming with momentum that truly brings home the orchestra’s musical power. The booklet includes an essay by the editor, Jonathan Del Mar, discussing Bärenreiter, as well as fascinating conversations with Rattle, offering deeper insight into Beethoven’s music and Rattle’s interpretation.
