Rattle’s new complete Sibelius symphony collection—which captivated audiences in Berlin—is now complete! “Berlin Philharmonic Recordings” has released the complete Sibelius symphonies performed by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. This deluxe package includes 4 CDs and 2 Blu-ray discs. The four CDs feature all the symphonies, while the two Blu-ray discs include, on the first disc, all the symphonies and bonus footage in 96 kHz/24-bit stereo and surround sound, and on the second disc, all the symphonies in HD video. Rattle previously recorded the complete Sibelius symphonies with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra from 1981 to 1987, making this his second complete recording of the cycle. Rattle has had a fondness for Sibelius since childhood as a British citizen; in fact, when he made his conducting debut with the Liverpool Philharmonic, he conducted Sibelius’s Symphony No. 5, demonstrating that Sibelius is one of the composers with whom Rattle has a particularly deep connection. This Sibelius cycle with the Berlin Philharmonic has been a long-held aspiration of Rattle’s since he became principal conductor in 2002, and it is arguably the most fitting complete symphony cycle to mark the Sibelius Year of 2015.
