Ever since their first appearance together at the Waldbühne in 1985, Zimmermann and the Berlin Philharmonic have enjoyed a close association, and there is scarcely a conductor shaping today's orchestral world who has not collaborated with this outstanding violinist. The set opens with the Beethoven Violin Concerto, which Zimmermann himself calls "the Everest of violin concertos". Returning to the work with the Berlin Philharmonic for the first time in thirty years, he gives a performance of flawless assurance, with Daniel Harding drawing soloist and orchestra into close partnership and conducting with keen sensitivity to the score. Next comes Berg's Violin Concerto, premiered in 1936 and inscribed "To the memory of an angel" as a requiem for Manon Gropius, who died young. Zimmermann's reading lays bare the deeply Romantic side of this twelve-note work, and he looks back on his time performing it with Kirill Petrenko as an unforgettable "wonderful moment". The set closes with Bartók's two violin concertos, recorded in 2016 with the Berlin Philharmonic and Alan Gilbert, an artist with whom Zimmermann has enjoyed a friendship of more than twenty years. The exuberant First Concerto was written as a declaration of love to the young violinist Stefi Geyer, while the Second captivates through its sensuous melodies and inventive formal design; Zimmermann counts the latter "among the three greatest of all violin concertos".
