A highly anticipated new release from the Berlin Philharmonic and Rattle. The Beethoven cycle, performed in October 2015 at the Philharmonie in Berlin—the orchestra’s home—is now available in a 5CD+3BD box set. Rattle previously performed all nine Beethoven symphonies with the Berlin Philharmonic in 2008, making this the duo’s second such collaboration. The fact that Rattle has chosen to tackle these defining works as a conductor during the latter half of his tenure speaks to his extraordinary ambition and determination. Rattle previously recorded the complete Beethoven symphonies with the Vienna Philharmonic in 2002. That recording, which utilized the Jonathan Del Mar edition published by Bärenreiter in the latter half of the 20th century and incorporated Rattle’s distinctive interpretation, created a new vision of Beethoven that was the talk of the town at the time. Although the same edition is used in this performance, Rattle’s incisive, penetrating style, his meticulous conducting that cherishes every single note, and the Berlin Philharmonic’s weighty expression all come together to create a performance brimming with momentum that truly brings home the orchestra’s musical power. The booklet includes an essay by editor Jonathan Del Mar on Bärenreiter, as well as fascinating conversations with Rattle, providing deeper insight into Beethoven’s music and Rattle’s interpretation. This set contains five CDs and three Blu-ray discs. The Blu-rays are divided into audio discs containing only high-quality audio tracks and video discs featuring footage of the concerts; they also include a documentary chronicling the Berlin cycle and an introduction in which Rattle discusses Beethoven.
