Furtwängler & VPO: Beethoven’s “Pastoral” and Smetana’s “The Moldau” from New Master Recordings 2-track, 38-centimeter, Open-Reel Tape Reissue Series From the Producer This latest remaster of Furtwängler & the VPO’s Beethoven recordings, utilizing new source material, follows previous releases of Symphony No. 3 “Eroica” (GS-2280), Symphonies Nos. 4 & 7 (GS-2282), No. 1 and No. 5 “Fate” (GS-2284), and No. 9 “Choral” (GS-2205). This release of “Pastoral” and “The Moldau” marks the final volume in the series. Unfortunately, the Second and Eighth Symphonies are not included in this series, but the seven major works can now be enjoyed in the finest sound quality. When it comes to Furtwängler’s Beethoven, it seems that the complete symphony set released in December 1991 (Toshiba EMITOCE 7530–4) is currently trading for between 40,000 and 80,000 yen. However, as long as you have the latest GS release, considering not only the sound quality but also the comprehensiveness of the liner notes, there is absolutely no need to buy such exorbitantly priced used copies anymore.
