A Legendary, Stunning Performance: Katsuyoshi Uno / *Romantic* As you likely know, music critic Katsuyoshi Uno—who has gained popularity for his provocative writing—is also known for his distinctive conducting style, and his uniquely unconventional performances continue to generate significant buzz, for better or worse. It is said that Mr. Uno displayed the full extent of his truly unrestrained, astonishing style in his performances during the 1980s. Among these, his performance of Bruckner’s Symphony No. 4 with the Nihon University Symphony Orchestra has long been the subject of debate (?) and has been the stuff of legend among enthusiasts; now, that recording has finally been released on CD. Recorded live in stereo on June 20, 1981, this performance marked Mr. Uno’s debut as a concert conductor. As for the performance itself, it is so astonishing that I can only say: I urge each and every one of you to judge it for yourselves with your own ears. Starting with the overture to *The Marriage of Figaro*, the outlandish tempo changes, the fierce dynamics, and the unusual balance left me astounded—and as for the Bruckner that followed, I simply lack the words to describe it. I take my hat off to the Nihon University Orchestra for their valiant efforts in keeping up with this incredibly unique and unconventional conducting style. “Grand Slam,” the label that released this CD, is an independent label founded by Naoya Hirabayashi, who previously served as editor-in-chief of the now-legendary quarterly magazine for audiophiles, *Classic Press*. Mr. Hirabayashi, who was a member of the Nihon University Orchestra at the time of the performance and, as chair of the program selection committee, was the driving force behind “inviting Mr. Uno,” wrote the liner notes himself, detailing the story behind the recording.
